The German Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. On this website we would like to provide some information about our branch at Altona, a borough in the city of Hamburg, Germany.
Our Volunteers provide a range of different services, organised in specialist groups.
The largest group of about 80 volunteers is responsible for Emergency response and First Aid services at events as well as providing shelter during evacuations for World War II bomb disposals (These bombs are still found during construction works.).
The Communications, Logistics and Safety group deals with all technical problems and provide communication services. They also help co-ordinate staff during operations. Furthermore this group provides logistical support.
The Ambulance Service responds to emergencies during events or at major incidents. The staff are volunteer Paramedics and Emergency Physicians.
Our search and rescue dogs help find missing persons, both in Germany and abroad. The dogs and their handlers have helped during the aftermath of the earthquakes in Armenia in 1988 and in Turkey in 1990 and 1999.
The Catering group offers mobile catering for our staff as well as for the public during major incidents of evacuations.
During large events our Volunteers staff two rapid-response motorcycle units supporting the Ambulance Service
Here are some events we have provided our service for:
Children and young adults aged 5 to 25 are active members in the German Red Cross Youth at Altona. Our branch also offers First Aid training for the public.
